Haikaburi (Ash Covered) Tsubo

Artist: Aki Tamiya

Aki Tamiya's unglazed vessels are made primarily with clay from Mino and Shigaraki and fired in an anagama or gas kiln. Tamiya-sans work is characterized by simple shapes and forms with expressive, textured surfaces resulting from transformations that occur in the kiln during firing.

The technique of Haikaburi involves positioning the vessel in the ash pit of the kiln and allowing the pot to be buried in the swirling ash which fuses with the clay body to stunning effect.
