Artist: Masaru Kawai
30,000 yen ($271.26 USD)

Gifu based craftsman Masaru Kawai crafts traditional Japanese objects and utensils using a variety of select local woods.

Wagatabon take their name from the Wagatani Village in Ishikawa Prefecture where they were originally produced by local artisans. The box like tray can be used for serving or for storage.
Using traditional techniques and special tools Kawai hand-carved this tray from a single piece of chestnut and finished it with a lacquer coat that has been applied and wiped off several times to allow the wood grain to be revealed.
