Ash Glaze Flat Plate

Thin, lightweight plates made from a red, iron rich clay and fired with an ash glaze. The surface appearance of each plate is unique resulting from the natural reactions from the iron found in the clay when being fired in the kiln. (**the surface appearance/ tone of each plate will vary. View all the images to see examples.)

The pale pink spots on these plates are referred to as Gohonte. The term dates back to Azuchi-Momoyama period. Gohonte is appreciated for the beauty in the randomness and unevenness of the patterns.
