Taiki Sugishima gave each tray a delicate texture before applying an urushi (Japanese lacquer) finish. The coat give the iron tray its distinctive color as well acting as a protective coat to deter rust. (The surface appearance of each handmade tray will vary slightly)

Metal artist Taiki Sugishima completed the doctoral program in Sculpture at Hiroshima City University Graduate School of Arts in 2001. He later studied the traditional Japanese metalware craft of tankin as well as forging techniques with two craftsmen skilled in the respective skills.Currently he produces a variety of work in different materials from cooking pots and utensils to objects, sculptural pieces, and work for architectural projects.
