A sturdy earthenware mortar crafted by artisans in Iga, using a local clay and glaze. The ridges inside the bowl are carved in a regular pattern that allows herbs, seeds, spices, nuts etc to be finely crushed with ease. A spout is included for pouring liquids, and a thin glaze in the interior prevents the bowl from absorbing moisture and retaining the scent of crushed foods.
