Shinpeki Vase / Ø11.5cm x H15cm
Hiroki Ooura textures his ceramics by building up and manipulating layers of urushi ( Japanese lacquer) clay, and pigments through repeated applications and firings.
He utilized the same techniques for the series of wall panels and paintings he produced for the current exhibition, in order to achieve the same colors and surface textures as his ceramic work. Layers of lacquer, clay, and pigment were applied to wood panels fired in in a kiln. For larger pieces that exceeded his kiln capacity, Ooura-san adapted his method, creating a similar layered urushi base and then applying and manipulating pigments and paints.
