Hiroyuki Watanabe’s used small hand tools to delicately carve the bottom and rim of this large square tray before applying a shiro-urushi (white lacquer) finish. The patterned sides and bottom of the tray contrast with the smooth flat surface of the top.

Hiroyuki Watanabe studied the craft of urushi during his undergraduate years before receiving his master's degree in Industrial Arts from the prestigious Tokyo University of the Arts. He has since authored a book, taught and holds workshops on woodcraft, all while producing and exhibiting a line of handmade utensils, tableware and lamps.
