Bashoshi Paper Fan #13
**Each fan has a unique handwoven pouch. The second image shows the pouch that comes with that fan

A paper fan is crafted with care by a skilled fan artisanin Yamanashi, using basho paper made in Okinawa. A very thin layer of basho paper covers the front of the fan, while a sturdy kozo paper layer reinforces the back. Each fan has a unique pouch, created by "Iriagari," a brand that introduces beautiful handwoven fabrics from Okinawa, uses vintage woven fabric preserved by Akiko Ishigaki from Beniura Kobo on Iriomote Island, as well as fabric she wove in the past.

  • Basho paper production had once ceased in the Meiji era but was revived when Eiichiro Abe sought to restore Ryukyu paper, with his disciple Takahiko Katsu later bringing basho paper back into existence. As one type of Ryukyu paper, basho paper is made from the "ito-basho" (thread banana) plant, the same material as Okinawa’s iconic "basho-fu" textiles. This paper is characterized by its robust, rough texture and the high presence of non-cellulose fibers, giving it a rustic, austere quality.
  • Due to humidity and dryness, warping or cracking in the paper may occur; please store in a well-ventilated area.
  • Although the 7.5-inch size is sometimes sold as a men’s size, this fan is intended for unisex use.
