Shinji Hidaka
Shinji Hidaka originally studied painting before turning his attention to the production of ceramics and establishing a studio in the city of Mizunami, Gifu.In 2016 Hidaka moved his studio to Okayama prefecture. Hidaka-san's work is influenced by a fondness for the ancient pottery traditions of Korea, Vietnam, and other Southeast Asian countriesLately he has been focusing on East Asian ceramics from the 10th to 12th centuries, with a particular interest in Goryeo celadon. As an extension of this interest, he has been creating flower vases. While celadon is often associated with China, where it has a more opulent image, the color of Goryeo celadon has been compared to jade and is said to have even influenced Chinese ceramics. The clay used is stoneware-based, mixed with soil from the Korean Peninsula.
