Okikago (Basket) S / w38cm x d26cm x h28cm
Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, has long been known as a production area for igusa (rush grass).
The ikago baskets made by Sunami Toru Shoten were commonly used as shopping baskets in households from the late 1940s to the 1960s. These baskets are crafted by weaving i-nawa (rush grass rope) into a fabric-like sheet using a large loom, then stitching and assembling the material into a basket shape.
When newly made, ikago exudes the fresh scent of rush grass, and its initially green color gradually matures into a rich warm color over time (see last image). The material is highly durable and water-resistant, allowing the basket to be used for decades with proper care.
